Saturday Night at Memorial Union: Islands with Brazos

Islands is certainly an anomaly.

The band’s breezy and poppy sound, reflected by their name even, is contrasted by their venomous ability to produce songs that cut deep.

Take the video for their hit song, “Hallways.”

Singer Nicholas Thornburn steps out onto a dark stage backed by a band of dancing skeletons and sings bright melodies over a driving dance beat. The skeletons provide organic harmonies before pulling the singer off the stage by a cane and returning him as a skeleton.

Opening for Islands is another smooth indie rock band, Brazos.

Featuring soaring vocals and some impressive guitar work, Brazos’ latest release, Saltwater, earned the exultation of critics.

So, if you’ll be craving some tasty indie rock to follow up a sweet Badger Homecoming victory, come to Der Rathskeller.
