Thursday night at The Sett: Cabaret Extravaganza

This week, WUD Music presents some new and exciting programming slightly different than the usual fair.

To contrast from the rock and hip-hop acts that usually grace our stages, this Thursday at Union South you can enjoy a variety of hit musical numbers from recent musicals. InterMission Theatre, UW-Madison’s premier student-run theatre organization, has organized a cast of 12 singers and a nine-piece band that will perform songs from popular Broadway musicals from the last 25 years such as Company, Legally Blonde, and The Book of Mormon. Ranging from solo numbers to large-group songs, the selections will be strung together to create a loose story arc, much like how professional theatre companies in New York City produce cabaret shows.

Since the founding of the group last fall, their membership has grown to about 60 dedicated members (several of whom are pictured above) who aspire to create all different varieties of theater projects. In fact, this cabaret show will be just one of InterMission Theatre’s quality productions. In addition to several other smaller theater projects, the troupe – led by UW-Madison students Nick Connors and Quinn Elmer – produced the full-length musical Space Voyage: The Musical Frontier last spring. The production was extremely well received, selling-out three of its four performances as well as garnering positive reviews from both The Daily Cardinal and The Badger Herald. Hoping to continue these successes, the group plans to produce another full-length musical this coming spring.

It’s not too often that unique events such as cabaret shows find their ways into the Wisconsin Union’s programming, especially in venues like the Sett, so you should be sure to check out InterMission Theatre’s Fall Cabaret this Thursday, December 5. The Curtain goes up at 8:00pm at The Sett in Union South.
