This Weekend’s Shows

FRIDAY:
El Ten Eleven is going to rock…they remind me a lot of Ratatat with a little bit more bite and more of an electronic element. Don’t sleep on the opener either…Basic Physics is a DJ duo that will surely get the dance party started. You can expect to hear a Daft Punk remix among other things. Influences of deadmau5 and Booka Shade.

SATURDAY:
Emancipator is one of my favorite producer/DJs right now. His album, Soon it will be Cold Enough, hasn’t left my regular listening rotation since its illegitimate download a few years ago. Hip hop beats are masterfully crafted (pun totally intended for show proximity) alongside euphoric strings and arctic voices to create something that really digs deep in your soul. Not a feeling I would normally associate with electronic music. This set might not be as bangin as some other DJ’s playing in Milwaukee, but its free and you can sleep in your own bed afterwards. Oh yeah, and Steez is playing too Cool Steez = creepfunk = fun.

stressed out?

me too. so last night i decided to watch into the wild again to get my mind off of genetics. i should not have done that. watching that movie makes me want to drop out, burn my social security card, and move to alaska. i would too except for the fact that i would pobably only make it as far west as iowa before something terrible happened to me.

into the wild is not only inspiring to the hitchhiker in all of us. it also has some kickass music. the whole soundtrack is by eddie vedder. it’s probably one of my top three favorite soundtracks (along with dazed and confused and o brother where art thou?). below are videos of my two favorites from the soundtack, “guaranteed” and “hard sun”.

how many weeks until thanksgiving break? i need it bad.

How you got here

Ok, I realize that you probably started reading our blog because you’re a member of WUD music, or clicked a link on Facebook, or have an intense interest in the Mayercraft Carrier (Our top three search terms: John Mayer, Mayercraft, John Mayer cruise. This is depressing). But I sincerely hope you’re the guy who found our blog by typing these search terms into Google. Because then you’ve made my day.

“Wolf In A Spacesuit” — Somebody went through seven pages of results, only to get to this. At least you, dedicated Wolf In A Spacesuit fan, have their email address so you can stalk them or something.

“Ski Slalom” — not just one, but two people passed up both Spanish version of a ski slalom flash game AND a video of the perfect ski slalom run in Wii Fit to read about how it may be an allegory for cocaine use.

“Andrew Bird Hot” — Andrew Bird is many things. Hot is not one of them.

Tokyo Police Club Movie — Somebody needs to prevent this from happening. Congress, maybe. (On a side note, it looks like one fucked up movie)

Antietam battlefield pictures — “Andrew Bird Hot” returns over 12 times more hits than pictures from the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Just sayin.

“Fuck on terrace” — maybe more interesting than anything we could have posted up here is how often Google returned “bears fuck on terrace.”

History of the Flint Tropics — Some guys were pathetic enough to name their intramural basketball team after a movie of outstanding mediocrity. We rightly rip them a new asshole.

weezer lil wayne lost respect — We’re the first ones to come up for this profanely specific search. Good work, team.

I suppose I should put something music-y up here. After all, we are a music blog. So, uh… I’m listening to Gang Gang Dance right now. Yeah.

November 4, 2009

it is november 4th

and they’re already trying to sell me holiday crest whitestrips. seriously, i’ve already seen a few holiday/christmas commercials. another thing they’re trying to sell this holiday season: bob dylan singing christmas carols. i’m not buying it. i love bob dylan, but only when he’s singing nonsense like the entire highway 61 revisited album. ok so the lyrics on highway 61 revisited do make sense in their own weird way, but they don’t have a concrete message like “silver bells” or “o’ come all ye faithful”.

anyways, back to the christmas album. it’s called christmas in the heart. it kind of reminds me of that crazy great-uncle or weird third cousin we all have that chain smokes, drinks too much, and decides to serenade the whole family at the annual holiday party. if you think you don’t have a relative like that, you’re lying to yourself. i’ve posted two of my favorites from highway 61 revisited. listen and compare to christmas in the heart courtesy of lala and pitchfork.

i personally think bob dylan is much better off singing about paul revere’s horse, jezebel the nun, and abraham than santa. but maybe that’s just me.

back at 5 AM this morning

A whole bunch of hours ago, I dragged myself over to USquare to talk to myself in the WSUM studios. There were at least 4 listeners, which makes it kind of worthwhile.

Here’s what I played! (I am not tech savvy enough to record the show stream, sorry.)

Club 770 Week 2 [download]

Say what you will about the opening track, but I woke up with it stuck in my head. I had to do it.

  • Ok, You’re Right – 50 Cent

The “Upcoming Shows” part

  • Saturday Morning – Real Estate
  • The Sound – Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson
  • Telephones – Headlights
  • Next Best Thing – Toki Wright

So Headlights and Toki Wright are both Molly Lloyd bookings, so I kicked off the “On Rotation In The Office” half of the show with a continuation of Molly songs… Dawes, duh.

  • When My Time Comes – Dawes

Okay, so my dad requested the next two. If you got up at 4:45 AM to hear my show, I’d play what you want to hear, too.

  • Two Weeks – Grizzly Bear
  • The Avalanche – Sufjan Stevens

For our lovely promo A.D., JLM Quam.

  • The Modern Leper – Frightened Rabbit

These next two were just for me, so whatever. I’m playing the music. I woke up at 4:22. I’m going to play what I want to listen to.

  • Home – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
  • Once I Was Pretty – The Mary Onettes

And because Zola Jesus is featured in the vocals here…

  • In Earth’s Palm – Former Ghosts

Love you kids.

a friend shared this link with me

thanks lizo!

dj-moondance-the-crash-album
i’m not sure if i like this or not. it’s a mashup of dave matthews band and jay z by dj moondance. click here to check it out yourself. i like dave matthews band and i like jay z, i just don’t know if these were the best choices of songs to “mash” together. i was at the dave concert that the roots opened for at alpine valley in 2007. the roots came out for jimi thing and it was amazing, so the combination of rap and dave is possible. i just don’t think this effort by dj moondance cuts it. any thoughts?

so halloween is over

hopefully you’ve recovered from your hang over. if not, grab your aspirin and check out this video of jose gonzalez. it’s a few years old, but jose is always good to listen to when your liver hates you and your whole body hurts. he’s also good when you don’t feel like complete crap.

Mos Def likes DOOM

Mos has his money on DOOM over Lil’ Wayne in a freestyle. I do too.

this is 91.7 fm wsum madison!

If you had happened to be up at 5 AM last Tuesday morning (or Monday night), you could have tuned in to the inaugural episode of the new WUD Music radio hour, Club 770, on 91.7 FM here in Madison, the student radio station. Don’t worry if you didn’t catch it, though, because here’s what I played.

Also, don’t worry, next semester the show will be at a real time.

What I Played [download]

These first two tracks commemorated the real Club 770 (R.I.P. Union South), where both played before they “got big.”

  • Together We’ll Ring In The New Year – Motion City Soundtrack
  • Ghost Under Rocks – Ra Ra Riot

A couple Memorial Union shows of the past…

  • Tiger Mountain Peasant Song – Fleet Foxes
  • Major Label Debut – Broken Social Scene

Some highlights of this semester so far:

  • Here Comes the Sky – Crocodiles
  • Pulling On A Line – Great Lake Swimmers

And now, for fun, “On Rotation In The Office” — what we’ve been listening to around the Union, wishing we could book, obsessing about, and singing along to in our bedrooms… That last one might just be me though.

  • Dreams – Smith Westerns
  • Swim (To Reach The End) – Surfer Blood
  • Let’s Go Surfing – The Drums
  • Love Is All I Am – Dawes
  • Animal (Mark Ronson Remix) – Miike Snow
  • are you still in vallda? – jj
  • Eminent Victorians – Princeton
  • Lust For Life – Girls

You can hear my lovely voice again in a couple days either over the airwaves or streaming on wsum.org and through iTunes. Or you can just wait and download the file of what I played because you are not masochistic and like to sleep.
