Spend your Valentine’s day with a night of upbeat, feel good indie pop.
White Arrows have been described as “psychedelic pop” and that encompases a lot of their sound. With electronic undertones and it will be hard not to dance as they play. This is what good pop music sounds like. Originally getting their start in New York but now based out of Los Angeles, they released their first album, Dry Land Is Not A Myth in 2012. Their newest album In Bardo was released in September of 2014. Previously they’ve toured with the likes of Cults, White Denim, The Neighbourhood, Santigold, and The Naked and Famous. Fans of any one of these acts plus fans of groups like Animal Collective and MGMT will LOVE this show.

Along with White Arrows, CHAPPO is playing. I swear you’ve heard their song Come Home before, it was definitely in a commercial or something a couple years ago. It’s infectious and poppy and is one of the most fun songs to get stuck in your head. It’s off their full length album Moonwater which was released in 2012. More recently though, CHAPPO released an EP entitled Celebrate in December.

Hey there music lovers! If you haven’t heard yet, we are having a ticketed show to end our Fall semester with a bang. Independent rappers Dizzy Wright and Jarren Benton are coming to Union South THIS FRIDAY, December 5th, and tickets are still on sale!
I’m sure a lot of you have a lot of questions about the show overall, so we’re here to lay everything out for you (in FAQ form), so when all your friends are hearing about this show last minute and grilling you with questions, you will have the inside scoop from us and be the cool friend for knowing what the hell is going down on campus. Without further ado, here are the facts:

When is this show? Where is it?
Again, this show is Friday, December 5th. It will be taking place in The Sett in Union South. If you need to utilize Mapquest or another service to find the venue, the address for Union South is 1308 W. Dayton Street, 53715.
Wait a second. WUD Music shows are normally $FREE.99. Why do I have to pay for this one?
While we here at WUD Music strive to fulfill our mission of booking great free music every weekend, on occasion we will book an artist that takes a little more out of our budget than average. Selling tickets for these special shows allow us to present the artist to you for a price that is affordable for both you and us.
So how much are tickets?
Tickets are $15 today through Thursday. The price increases to $18 on Friday (the day of the show).
Am I eligible to purchase a ticket?
Tickets are available for purchase by any and all students in the Madison area with Student ID. UW-Madison, Edgewood College, MATC, Madison Media Institute, you name it. Members of The Wisconsin Union can also purchase tickets.
Awesome, I am eligible! So where can I purchase these tickets?
Tickets are available for purchase at the Memorial Union and Vilas Hall box offices. The MU box office is located in the newly renovated West Wing, and the Vilas box office is attached to VIlas Hall and can be entered on East Campus Mall.
Crap. I am not a student, nor am I am Union member. But I REALLY wanted to see this show! What can I do to get in?
Fortunately for you, Mr./Ms. Ineligible, there are ways to attend this show if you are not currently a student or Union Member. You can join The Wisconsin Union here, and become a Union Member today! Trust us, there are more benefits to becoming a member than just this show.
Eligible purchasers are also able to buy up to two tickets, so they can bring a guest (eligible or not) with them to the show!
What the hell? I’m trying to buy tickets online and I can’t print them off! What’s up with that?!
Because of our guidelines for who is allowed to purchase tickets, we have to check for student IDs or Union membership cards regardless of whether you purchase in person or online. All tickets ordered online can be picked up at will call the day of the show.
Where is this “will call” you speak of?
You can pick up will call tickets at the Union South box office, which is near the Daily Scoop on the first floor of the building.
Can I purchase tickets the day of at the Union South box office also?
Yes, you can! Remember though, tickets are $18 day of show, so get your rear in gear and save yourself some money! The Union South box office will be open the day of the show from 5:30PM to 10:00PM.
When is Dizzy Wright ACTUALLY going to go on stage?

I’m normally not one to put genre labels on bands. But today, I AM THAT PERSON. “Psychedelic Country” is TOTALLY Night Moves. If I had to describe them in terms of other bands (which I’ve been trying to do for years now with almost no success because they are so original) I would mayyyyybe say something along the lines of Fleetwood Mac beats with twangy/Tame Impala-ish/Temples-ish vocals. But even that cannot describe them in all their glory.
Look at all that hair.
I listen to a lot of hip-hop/rap and alternative artists, and not much country music. However, I find myself scouring the interwebz in search of more Night Moves.
Between their charming twang, groovy bellbottoms, and echoing vocals, there is something for everyone to love.
This Minneapolis-based group has played on campus before. I first saw them on complete accident in high school in 2011, and INSTANTLY fell in love. Since then they’ve returned every year, probably Madison’s music taste is impeccable and we don’t want to escape those dreamy chords.

Night Moves’ return to Madison is special this time. They’re bringing some friends with them: Pony Bwoy.

When wandering around Youtube Narnia one night I discovered Pony Bwoy’s most chill music video; it oozed synth and bled passion. My eyes were glued to my Ba$ic Bitch Macbook Pro. I was hooked.

Independent Hip-Hop heads rejoice! We are proud to present Funk Volume rappers Dizzy Wright and Jarren Benton as a dynamic duo that is ready to help Madison students finish their fall semester with a bang.
Equal parts hard and chill, Dizzy Wright comes out of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has been establishing his own sound since he signed to L.A. rapper Hopsin’s independent record label, Funk Volume.Through his hustle, he earned himself a spot in XXL Magazine’s 2013 Freshman Class. His latest project, State of Mind, is a seven-song EP that dropped in April and peaked at 54 on the Billboard 200. You can listen to State of Mind via Spotify below.
Hailing from Decatur Georgia, Jarren Benton brings an entirely different vein of hip hop with his sound. With influences coming from both Eminem and Outkast, Jarren looks to maintain elements from the mainstream and inject his own element of crazy simultaneously. Benton’s hustle earned him a 2014 Freshman Class designation from XXL, and has most recently been sharing new music every week of #BlackOctober.
If you’re going to take time away from studies before midterms get real, this show is where you’ll want to be to set the weekend off right. See you at Union South!

BEHOLD, the most METAL band on Earth! Or at least that is what Madison-based group Lords of the Trident claims. With an epicly extensive legend on the formation of the band, and musical arrangements that harken back to the 80s metal sound of bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, the question of their being the most metal band in the world at least warrants debate.
In all seriousness, the band is more a parody of itself than anything, and more comparable to Tenacious D (minus the wussy acoustic guitar) than Iron Maiden. I mean, come on. They have a song called “Rapeshore”.
But despite the ridiculousness of their image and the pyrotechnics and confetti cannons, Lords of the Trident is a talented group of individuals playing the music they love and having as much fun as they can on stage. Because of their talent and attitude, they actually have a strong core following from Madisonians. Their most recent release was funded by Kickstarter, and with only 108 backers, they more than tripled the amount of money they needed to fund the project. If that’s not fan dedication, I don’t know what is.
Lords of the Trident will be headlining Saturday, 8/10 at the Memorial Union Terrace. The first stop on their fall tour, fellow metal bands Thunderunderus and Beast Warrior will be providing support. The show starts at 9:00PM, and admission is FREE!
Tonight, WUD Music is presenting what is arguably the biggest rap show it has ever produced on the Memorial Union Terrace. Rappers El-P and Killer Mike have both gained mad respect over the years in the alternative and dirty south hip-hop scenes, respectively.
El-P is a former member of the underground group Company Flow, has produced music for a plethora of artists, and is the co-founder, owner and CEO of New York record label Definitive Jux.
Killer Mike has been in the game since he met Outkast rapper Big Boi in his college years, and has been on the grind ever since. While releasing six solo albums, he was also featured on a handful of songs in the early 2000s, most notably Outkast’s Grammy-winning single “The Whole World”.
Tonight, these decorated MCs come to you as a newly formed hip-hop duo, Run the Jewels. Their self-titled album can be downloaded for free here, and trust me when I say it is more than worth the time spent to acquire it. Clocking in just under 33 minutes, the duo brings 10 tracks with unique, hard-hitting beats and verses that seem effortlessly crafted. When El-P’s faster staccato bars mix seamlessly with Mike’s smooth dirty south flow, it leaves the listener more than satisfied. But my words alone can’t justify the album. Listen for yourself.
El-P and Killer Mike will be supported by Despot, a New York underground rapper with over a decade of experience, and Kool A.D., a former member of the New York group Das Racist.

You know a weekend is going to be great when you’re already anticipating for the week to be over on Monday at one in the morning. Whether you’ll be attending the annual Mifflin Street Block Party, hitting up capitol square for the weekly fresh market, or kicking back and watching a Star Wars trilogy (preferably the original one), there is no shortage of funtivities available for Madison citizens this first weekend of May.
And while all of these funtivities are respectable means of entertainment in their own right, I want to highlight the weekend event I will be attending: Revelry Music and Arts Festival. DISCLAIMER: I am in no way being prompted to write this feature by any member of WUD Music. I chose to write this feature because it’s music related, it’s Madison news, I love music, live concerts are awesome, and I want to give those that are or may be going a small preview of what they can expect out of the musical talent at the festival. So let’s get to that. I am going to give my short, unarticulated opinion of the artists that were highlighted in the wonderfully crafted video below. Here goes nothing.
Toro y Moi – Contrary to what your initial reaction may be, Toro y Moi is actually one man. And he may be one of the chillest men I’ve ever heard on a track. For starters, he combined both the Spanish and French languages to create his stage name. It doesn’t matter as long as it translates to English easily (Bull and Me) and sounds cool, right? Beyond this, his calm vocals and looped electronic beats are combined to him consider him a part of the genre known as chillwave. It doesn’t get any more chill than that.
Hoodie Allen – One of my close friends has been a Hoodie fan well before the Revelry lineup was released, and since its release I have hopped on the bandwagon hard. His All American EP was only $5 on iTunes, and provides eight solid tracks that exemplify his catchy music and smart lyrics. In addition, his newest mixtape Crew Cutsis on his website for free! Outside of his music, the former Google employee and UPenn Sprint Football player has collaborated on comedy videos with CollegeHumor that are just too funny to only watch once.
Phox – This seven-piece band from Baraboo, Wisconsin utilizes instruments that run the gamut of sounds, resulting in songs that are most often whimsical, but can also be hectic and heavy. No songs particularly called out to me, but there’s no doubt that the band is unique.
The Mowgli’s – While the only music I could find of theirs was the five songs from their Love’s Not Dead EP, this pop-rock octet has an established pedigree with a recent performance at SXSW 2013 and a scheduled performance at Lollapalooza 2013. Their eight-person chorus is extremely catchy, and “San Francisco” is an irresistible summer jam.
Chance the Rapper – Chance the Rapper is definitely a different sounding hip-hop artist, with a significantly higher voice than your typical MC. His second mixtape, Acid Rap drops tomorrow, so hopefully Madison will be receptive to his new material come Saturday.
Delta Spirit – This band has a strong alternative rock sound, and many of the songs I listened to have the feel of a live show even though they’re master tracks. I trust that their live performance will be nothing short of a great display of musical talent. In addition, they have a song on the official first volume of The Walking Dead soundtrack, so I am sold.
Julian Lynch – Chill, instrumental, and articulate all at once, Julian Lynch’s music gives off good vibes. With a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology (!?) from UW-Madison, I think concert attendees will give the former city resident a warm reception.
Oh Land – Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, Nanna Øland Fabricius serves as singer, songwriter, and producer, for her music. Pianos and an extensive palette of electronic sounds make for a plethora of experimental tunes for Oh Land to sing over. It will be interesting to see how her music translates to a live performance.
So there you have it: A preview of the biggest acts that Revelry has to offer. It would seem that there is a little something for everyone in the festival’s first installment, and I couldn’t be more excited. Here’s to the joys of live music, summer, and the continued success of this festival for years to come. Revel on.
As most of you soar off in the sky, escaping your busy student lives by plane to a hopefully warm climate, beg that same warm weather to follow you back to Madison, for the sake of all us. April would then only shower us with sun rays and good music.
You may recognize Sam James as a contestant on The Voice. He is a singer song-writer that grabbed everyone’s attention with his version of “Imagine.” Originating from Massachusetts, Sam James has been pursuing a music career from the beginning while developing his unique vocal style.
So, unique artists are what you like? Check out Mark Kroos at the end of April as he performs two guitar necks at the same time. According to his biography, he is the only artist touring as a solo artist with this instrument. Yes, two is better than one.
